The East Texas Room

The gum-paneled walls create the feeling of entering an East Texas forest. Photographs taken by Polly Smith show images of scenes throughout Texas in the early 1920s and 1930s. The first of two murals in the East Texas room depict the region before and after the discovery of oil. In this mural, the sleeping giants lie beneath the earth, while cotton and timber dominate the economy.

In the second mural, the giants have awakened and there is a rush toward industialization.
